Air Quality Laboratory

The Air Quality Laboratory is a newly-renovated 2200 sf laboratory shared by the research groups of Prof. Donahue, Prof. Pandis, Prof. Robinson and Prof. Davidson. The laboratory is designed to support collaborative, interdisciplinary work with state of the art facilities and equipment. Work facilitated by the lab includes both in-lab experiments as well as field campaigns, and facilities are designed so that the equipment can be easily moved from one experiment to another as needs dictate.

Facilities within the Air Quality Lab include:

  • A 16 cubic meter temperature-controlled smog chamber.
  • A high-pressure discharge-flow reactor.
  • An aerosol flow reactor.
  • Two clean rooms for filter preparation and analysis.
  • A mobile laboratory for field measurements.

Major equipment in the Air Quality Lab includes:

  • An Aerosol Mass Spectrometer.
  • A Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer.
  • Numerous gas chromatographs for gas- and condensed-phase measurements, including thermal desorption GC/MS, derivitization GC/MS, and gas trapping GC/MS.
  • Particle sizing, including several Scanning Mobility Particle Size Spectrometers (SMPS) and MOUDI cascade impactors.
  • A cloud condensation nucleus counter (CCNC).
  • An organic carbon, elemental carbon analyzer (OC/EC).
  • A thermal denuder for particle volatility measurement.
  • Two Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers (FTIR).
  • A UV/VIS CCD spectrometer.
