Combustion Sources

While some fraction of atmospheric particulates are generated in the atmosphere, many are produced directly by combustion. Different processes (large plants burning coal, oil, and gas, small wood fires, automobiles, etc) have very different source characteristics. Source characterization, a focus of Prof. Robinson, is a prerequisite for either understaning or controlling particulate levels.
